In March 2026, students from multiple schools and universities spent a weekend at Mercer Airfield disassembling a twin-engine Beechcraft Duchess under a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

It is the kind of work most people do not get near until they are in the industry. The Duchess was being stripped for parts to keep a fleet of other aircraft flying, so the work had a real purpose.

Students completed a health and safety induction before starting and produced progress reports for the certifying authorities. Secondary and university students worked alongside each other throughout the weekend.

Weather permitting, there is also a flight in a GA aircraft or microlight.
